Portland riding.

Got some company today from Marylynn king! She is pretty much a professional cyclist. So great to ride with her today!
Turns out 1,000 miles is a long way. But, I'm almost though! whew.

I love when it's hard to fall asleep due to nothing other than childlike excitement for the following day. ( oh and the fact that it's 8:14)

Favorite things about biking

I love races for the main reason that everyone is united for one similar purpose: They love, for whatever reason, the sport at hand. Before and after races people talk to one another in an uninhibited manner that comes only with a shared and vested interest in one common thing. During the race it is a different story. Competition overwhelms the senses and we forgive our innate desires to crush the competition. But pre and post event, community prevails.

I am finding the same community on the road. It is not a secret to other cyclists that I am out for longer than a day jaunt. Probably the tent that kills the mystery....many have started conversations, and been pleasant company and Today I met Bob.

Bob started talking with me at the perfect time. Right before a huge hill climb and when i was feeling pretty tired. We talked at first about a cool tour from SF to SD for disabled individuals' athletic programs . Then he talked about his wife's triathlete status and her startup outdoor company (primal) pretty cool... He then showed me a great alternate route and we went through ucsd campus and he offered me extra supplies. Him getting me up that hill was quite enough as I'm sure I was holding him back.

Anyway , today proved my love for cycling and adventure . Thanks Bob.

Day one: success

Venice to Oceanside

Today marks being 1/4 of the way there! Had a PR in terms of mileage today. I went about 118. I attribute about 15 of those miles to going the wrong way a couple of times but they still count now don't they?

Today was a day of beauty, frustration, and dehydration. The coastal ride is gorgeous and often you loose track of time just staring at the ocean. This, I realize is hazardous while cycling. The frustration came with my tiny map lacking specifics in areas and so I got turned around quite a fee times. The dehydration came from... You guessed it, lack of fluids. I realized I needed water and sodium midway through the day and that will explain the photo of rachels "finest" salt and vinegar chips. They really were fine and I felt much better post bag.
